Music U Studio Policy
Thank you for choosing Music U Studio for your musical goals! To ensure that you and/or your child get the most effective and creative teaching experience possible, we have established this policy:
MISSION:
Our mission is to create a learning environment that instills the joy of learning music, playing music, and making music in any person at any age while establishing a foundation for lifelong growth and learning.
LESSONS:
Lessons are offered weekly throughout the year. During the first lesson, your child’s teacher will assess their skill level and choose a book or books that best suit their learning style.
PRACTICE: A Family Responsibility
We aim to provide comprehensive musical instruction. Students are given practice assignments or activities/games to do at each lesson and will be expected to read through these assignments and work on them consistently until the next lesson. A few minutes of daily practice or facilitating the activities obtain MUCH better results than a few hours over one or two days. The amount of time that should be spent practicing varies between age groups and levels. The teacher may suggest a set amount of time, but the priority is that the student practices what is in their assignment notebook, regardless of how long it takes them (less time doesn’t necessarily mean a less productive practice session). Parents, praise, and encouragement are the most excellent tools in helping a young musician learn the routine of practice. Make time for the activities and games if your child is not getting practice assignments just yet. Once your child gets page assignments, sit down and listen to your child practice after their lesson, then listen again just before the next lesson. Comment upon the improvement you hear. This kind of encouragement and efficient practice routines will help your child get the most out of lessons.
YOUR INSTRUMENT
Be sure your instrument is tuned and in good condition. It isn't easy to enjoy playing an out-of-tune instrument. If you don’t already have one, please speak with your teacher before purchasing an instrument so that we can help you find a quality instrument that’s right for you.
E-MAIL COMMUNICATION
Music U Studio uses email to communicate information regarding scheduling, billing, special events, recitals, and other news directly related to you or your student. Please make sure the Music U emails do not go to your spam folder by adding us to your contacts/safe sender list. See here for more information on how to set this up.
MATERIALS:
The teacher chooses appropriate materials to fit the needs of each student. The student’s or parent’s responsibility will be to purchase materials the teacher recommends. The teacher may hand out supplemental material in addition to a student’s method books.
ON LESSON DAY
At a Preschool or Daycare: students are picked up from their classroom and brought to the designated music room.
In your home: please have an additional chair for the teacher next to the student and facilitate the lesson in a place as free from distraction as possible.
Online: Ideally, your camera should be set to a place where the teacher can see the student’s face and hands. It’s essential that the student can have their 30-minute lesson free from distractions. Phones, tablets, and laptops are all acceptable ways to have an online lesson. Our studio recommends Zoom or Google Meet for online lessons. You will receive login credentials for the Music U Studio parent and student portal. You can log in to the portal to join your Zoom lesson at your assigned lesson time.
RECITALS:
Performance is a big part of music instruction. Each year, there will be a recital and additional performance opportunities depending on interest level. Recital participation is optional but strongly encouraged.
SCHEDULED and RESCHEDULED LESSONS:
Because there is limited space, students or parents must carefully choose lesson times that can be attended year-round. Your child will receive one lesson each week. If you have a week where you need to reschedule, you may discuss scheduling a make-up lesson with your teacher. Otherwise, we will cancel that week, and you will not be charged a fee for that lesson. Regarding lessons that fall on a holiday, if you’d like to schedule a make-up lesson, you can check with your teacher to see if they have any availability. Otherwise, the lesson will be considered canceled, and you will not be charged for that lesson.
With regard to lesson cancelations, Music U requires at least a 24-hour notice for any missed lessons; otherwise, the lesson will be considered billable. If you’re unavailable and do not give prior notice, “no call, no show,” we’ll contact you and wait up to 10 minutes, otherwise the teacher will leave and the lesson will be considered billable. If you are running late, the teacher will only be obligated to stay for the scheduled lesson time, and regardless of lesson length, the lesson will be considered billable. Scheduling or rescheduling exceptions within a 24-hour window may be made at the teacher's discretion, but the lesson fee will still apply.
Please remember that your instructor has reserved a day and time, especially for you, and these reserved lesson times are what is calculated into your monthly fee, not your attendance.
STUDENT/PARENT PORTAL: You will receive a username and password to log in to the Music U Studio parent or student portal. There you can see upcoming lessons, current pieces your student is working on, a place to log practice time, and much more. You may also use the portal to cancel a lesson or request a make-up. You can also do this via email.
FEES AND TUITION: The Music U Studio offers year-round lessons. You will be charged for the upcoming lessons at the beginning of each month.
Breakdown of Fees and Tuition:
$35/lesson for 30-minute lessons at a partner daycare/preschool
$45/lesson for 30-minute lessons online or in the student’s home
$65/lesson for 45-minute lessons online or in the student’s home
$85/lesson for 60-minute lessons online or in the student’s home

SUMMER LESSONS: During the summer months of June through August, Music U encourages students to stay musically active and acknowledges that schedules are different due to vacations, etc. Our rescheduling policy will be flexible during these months. Please communicate with your teacher often. Lesson times can be adjusted in advance and planned around summer schedules for the greatest flexibility. Your teacher will discuss summer options with you toward the end of the school year.
PAYMENTS & PAST DUE PAYMENTS:
Payment for lessons is to be paid monthly, in advance. An invoice will be emailed to the email address provided on the 1st of each month, due by the 7th. Payments should be made online via the invoice link or on Venmo @MusicU. We use the “My Music Staff” service for billing and scheduling. You are welcome to set up automatic payments through this service. Invoices that have not been paid by the 7th of the month in which lessons are being taken will be considered past due. Invoices not paid by the 15th of each month will incur a $10.00 late fee and again every fifteen (15) days until payment has been received. Late payment reminders will be emailed for each late fee incurred. Weekly lessons will be paused for payments that are 60 days past due.
LESSON TERMINATION:
If a student no longer wishes to receive lessons, the student or parent must submit a written two-week notice. Students who wish to withdraw immediately will be billed for a withdrawal fee equivalent to two weeks of lessons or refunded any amount paid after the two-week notice.
